Little Drummers

13th May 2019

Yesterday was Mother's Day and it got me, a mother myself, thinking on what a mom truly wants on this very day. It could be a massage, a time-out or simply a wish that could come true. I personally believe the greatest gift a mom could give to her child is a music education and in return, the greatest reward a mom can receive is knowing how much her child enjoys the gift of music.

The first half of 2019 had been busy with various organizations inviting our LESI little drummers  to put up performances at their events. These performances present a platform to showcase the talents of our students and the stage indirectly transformed itself into a form of a report card to the parents. I have lost count of the number of proud and emotional faces I have seen in the audiences as the children smash through the performance. LESI little drummers became so popular that the management began to receive too many performance invitations that we had to sift through for the best and the most timely.

One memorable performance we did this year was the Melanoma March in Southbank where hundreds of family members of Melanoma victims come together to create awareness of this demon that took the lives of their loved ones away. Our drummers did the opening flag-off with gusto as the participants walked proudly with pictures of their loved ones on their shirts. Their unity and support for one another touched our hearts deeply. At that very moment, we were no longer drummers, but friends of these brave fighters and their supporters. We volunteered to stay on to welcome them back from the 1 hour march with  " We will rock you" and a hidden message in the music that we won't give up and that we will fight on.

This year by invitation of the Brisbane City Council, the LESI little musicians drummed up the streets of the city during the festive Lunar New Year with the Asian community. They were also warmly welcomed by the Mansfield 4122 community at the annual free movie event where thousands of the residents come together to spend a meaningful day, supporting local businesses and initiatives.

As mid of 2019 approaches, we look forward to serving everyone through offering complimentary music playgroups and instrumental classes to various communities. The first outreach happened with the Logan Moms and Bubs group in April this year.

Music is the core of an effective and holistic education. At LESI, we promise to be the provider of such music education with all our hearts.
